Hello, Thursday Nerds! Today, we’re starting out our post with an announcement. After careful consideration, we’re going to be cutting our posts down to one day a week on Thursdays. There are a couple of reasons for that.

First off, we’ve got a ton of ideas planned for all of you. More videos, more classes, and much more content. We never anticipated the immediate reaction you would all have to our site and we love all of you for that! We want to make sure the content that we bring to you continues to be of the highest-quality.

Second, it’s important to us that we give all of you time without sacrificing time with our family. We’ve got two growing nerds here who also need us, too.

What does that mean for the Garden? Bottom line? We’ll be posting one day a week less, but it’s our plan to bring you richer content and more videos. You guys seem to love those the best.

So…win-win!

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, onto our post! How many of you love reading? How many of you love the library? If you aren’t as sure about the second question as you are the first, then it’s time to revisit your public library. Libraries are way hipper than they used to be. Here’s one of the many reasons why.

Overdrive

What Is Overdrive?

Overdrive is an app that allows you to connect to your public library and borrow ebooks and audiobooks. What? Yep! You heard us right. Ebooks. Audiobooks. Through the app, you borrow a book, download it to your device and return it when you’re done. It’s some pretty slick tech.

Overdrive accounts are free, along with your library card. You don’t pay a fee to borrow and you’re still helping your local library.

What Do I Need To Use It?

The cool thing about Overdrive is that all you really need is a current library card. From there you:

  1. Access overdrive.com.
  2. Click the Sign Up button.
  3. Choose Sign Up Using Library Card.
  4. Enter your library name.
  5. Click Go.
  6. Select the library your card is associated with.
  7. Follow the prompts to create an account.

FAQs

    • Q: What platforms is Overdrive available for?
    • A: Overdrive is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, Windows Phone, Kindle, Mac, and Windows.
    • Q: Will my library offer every book I want to read?
    • A: Probably not. Especially, if you belong to a library that doesn’t offer a lot of titles on the shelves. In that case, you may not find many books available on Overdrive. However, you can always request them from your librarian.
    • Q: If you are an iPad user can you access Overdrive books in iBooks?
    • A: Accessing Epub files seem to be a little bit sketchy via Overdrive on iPad, however, you can access titles via the OverDrive app on your iPad. You’ll be able to read it within your browser and it will even remember where you left off.
    • Q: What format are books available in?
    • A: Ebooks are available in Kindle and ePub format. Many are also available as audiobooks.
    • Q: How long can you borrow e-books for?
    • A: Most libraries will give you a 21-day loan on titles, but check with your local library first. From there, you can even choose to renew for a few days if you’re unable to complete your reading during the initial loan period. Just like real library books! See, I told you the library was hip!
    • Q: What about those late fees?
    • A: They’re aren’t any! Overdrive loans expire on your device on their due date. Which means you might never have to pay for your forgetfulness again.

Sound awesome? Great! Then don’t delay. Download the Overdrive app to your devices and start your next read, today!
