Happy Thursday, fellow Nerdists! You may remember that last year we demoed how to install a cloud storage solution in your home using a tool called NextCloud. On May 22nd, 2017, NextCloud released their latest version—NextCloud 12. This new release touts several updates, so it immediately piqued our interest. For this post, we thought we’d demo how to do the upgrade, so you’ll know what to expect.

NextCloud 12 Feature List [UPDATED]

Before you check out the install demo, here are just some of the perks we should expect to find in NextCloud 12:

  • Enhanced contacts menu
  • Enhanced switching between apps
  • Easier folder sharing
  • Push Notifications in the browser
  • Unique public link sharing for multiple users with their own individual settings
  • Secure file uploading
  • Screen sharing
  • Users can join video calls from their next cloud instance
  • Immediate collaboration through Collabora Online
  • Social sharing apps are now readily available for install via the Bundles feature. Once installed, users are able to share content via social media channels.
  • The new Circles app allows uses to create custom groups, both private and public—similar to social media groups.
  • There are also several administrator enhancements, including Global Shares, Guest Access, Excludedirs App, Quota Warning App, JSLoader App, Impersonator App, and Backup App.
  • Enhanced Brute Force protection
  • Improved authentication

Installing NextCloud 12
