Greetings my friends. If you’ve been hanging out here at The Nerd Garden you may have heard that, in addition to being geeky, generally tech-savvy, and all-around cool people, Steph and I are also musicians. Today I wanted to take some time to show off one of my favorite instruments. The guitar! Guitars! Oh yeah, man. I love ’em.

The Music

It’s no secret that we love music. Sometimes I just like to chill out and play some jazzy chords. Other times I crank up it up to eleven and play along to some Sabbath, Hendrix or Zeppelin. It’s just good fun. Most time I like to jam some good old 12 bar blues.

Guitarists are always on a never-ending quest for the perfect sound. To get my perfect sound, or at least a sound I’m content with, I’ve tried a few different style guitars. I’ve also tested a tube amp that sounds great but is way-loud and a few effects pedals, including a couple that I built myself.

Building effects pedals? Yep. My music-geek side and techie-electronic-nerd side combined and I’m so happy with end result. It’s a replica of the circuit in the original Tube Screamer TS-808. I’ve sourced all the parts, etched my own circuit board, and soldered it all together based on plans found at tonepad.com.

Here’s a video of me geeking out over my guitars and gear.
